Sugarland Festival Site Overlook
My conceptual approach to the composition of the design is to capture the essence of Sugarland, TX since the city’s inception in 1838 and understand the evolution between then and now. This discovery informed the concept of “Sugar”land expanding as a company town to a town with a diverse population of wealth and influence. This research sparked new ideas of how to ReThink “Sugar”land as a way to find sponsorships for Festival Site Overlook. The term “Sugar” has many different synonyms that could be used to attract sponsorships for outdoor events from Imperial Sugar, Revlon (National Kissing Day), Outdoor movie nights (The Sugarland Express), health and wellness (Diabetes Awareness) and arts and crafts festivals (Sugar Art). In addition, connect the design with the landscape of the existing site to enhance Festival Site Overlook as a destination. The composition of the design reflects this evolution by illustrating the diverse range of people and implementing “Sugar” into the texture of each person’s face as well as a “Kiss” on the faces of the children.

South Main Underpass
The mural features famous music artist from the rich heritage of Memphis. Each artist represents genres including Hip-Hop, R&B, Pop, and the Blues. The music artists chosen from countless native Memphians are Elvis, Issac Hayes, Yo Gotti, Justin Timberlake, Johnny Cash, BB King, and Aretha Franklin. The color palette was chosen based a familiar MEMPHIS logo. Each color was then paired with the artist based on the disposition of the music and his/her personality. The background depicts a contemporary approach to a classic concept, which includes microphone, headphones, gold plated record player, drum beat patterns, Gibson guitar with cords, and an abstraction of a Memphis skyline via music waves. In addition, the
vertical columns are accented with a mid-tone gray and highlighted at the peak of the underpass with vintage tape deck symbols, that blends with the way finding. The colors of the columns are then pronounced at the exterior to accentuate the
verticality of the columns. -
